I am considering buying a Moody 346 or 35. These boats seem usually to be fitted with the T80 engine. I am not familiar with this engine, having previously owned boats with Volvo, Bukh or Yanmar engines. Are there any particular known problems with these engines? What is a typical life between top end or bottom end overhauls? Any tell-tale signs of typical problems to look out for when buying a boat fitted with this engine? Any guidance will be gratefully accepted.

    Thanks in advance

    Nigel,
The T80 is a good solid industrial engine marinised by Thorneycroft based on a Mitsubishi engine. In marine usage it is probably grossly under used compared with industry. Things to look for are general external appearance which may indicate neglect if tatty. The raw water pump on the port side, which if the seals are going may leak from a port underneath onto the starter etc. not good but easily fixable. Fuel lift pump ( port side front ) hopefully changed to an electric pump, but originally mechanical. When the engine is running it should be smooth,, possibly a bit agricultural, ! And rev to 3k + dependant on the prop fitted.
Spares are still fairly readily available for the engine as well as the marinisation parts and are reasonably priced.
    Hope this is of use
    Regards
    David

    David,
Many thanks for your helpful information. We are looking at two boats with the T80 engine this week so your pointers to where to look will be useful.
    Kind regards
    Nigel

    Hi Nigel
Our T80 is original to the boat and as David states they are a great engine. Change the oil in the engine AND gearbox every 100 hrs or once a season and they seem to go on and on.
Good luck with securing a boat - we LOVE ours - be it floating around in the Solent or running for home in the English Channel in a force 9.
    Fair winds
    John
