Rudder Waggle

Discussion in 'Thinking of buying a Moody ask a question here' started by Simon Neal, 6/7/17.

  1. Thank you for your help in advance.

I've been looking at a MK1 33 centre cockpit. Surveyor says the rudder is full of water. Does anyone know anything about the internal structure of the rudder? I'd like to know whether this might lead to a need for a complete rudder rebuild !££ Also the bottom bracket seems to be loose. Signs of the rudder rubbing against skeg right at bottom and the bracket (shoe is it?) Waggles a bit. A simple tighten things up or a major repair?

With thanks and in the hope of joining the ranks in due course.

If the rudder construction is the same as the Moody 31, the rudder is made in two halves and then bonded together around the shaft and other metal structure, with the internal void being filled with foam. The surveyor should be able to advise you on what needs doing and the likely costs?
