This solenoid contacted was removed from my M42 following the installation of a new engine. I think the same part is used on the M36 and possibly other Moodys. I believe its job is to allow charging current to be applied to both engine and domestic batteries once the appropriate voltage is reached. Description below is of the internet. The reason I’ve put it on this site is that Marine Projects fitted the wrong one on my boat (and quite possibly others). The original one got hot when the engine had been used for a long time and it transpired that Marine Projects had fitted an Albright part that wasn’t rated for continuous use. The part was changed for this one which has a continuous rating. For sale at £25. Can pick up from Hamble, Alton or Ruislip. PaulView attachment IMG_3402.jpeg

Albright SW180-2 single-acting solenoid contactor 200 Amps 12V DC, Continuous.

The SW180 has been designed for direct current loads, including motors as used on electric vehicles such as industrial trucks. Developed for both interrupted and uninterrupted loads, the SW180 is suitable for switching Resistive, Capacitive and Inductive loads.

The SW180 features single pole single throw, double breaking main contacts with silver alloy tips, which are weld resistant, hard wearing and have excellent conductivity. The SW180 has M8 stud main terminals and 6.3mm spade coil connections. It can be mounted via M5 tapped holes or a mounting bracket.

Continuous contactors by design are predominantly used for drive functions on vehicles, they make and break slower than intermittent solenoids and are recommended for prolonged contact periods.
