Hello, I had a survey done today on a moody 31 MKII and the mast compression post is very heavily corroded at the base and requires replacement. Any advice based on experience ? Surveyor suggested a SS replacment. Any useful contact around Solent?

You might find that once cleaned up there is still plenty of material and replacement isn't required.
Remember rust can take up 10x the volume of the initial material
I don't have a before pic but mine looked like yours before.

Thanks @Jonathan Vibert

I'll have a proper look when the mast is down for the standing rigging work. Did you use any specific anti rust / epoxy treatment before paiting it ?

I cleaned the rust off with a wire brush on a drill then treated with a rust 'converter' (from an auto shop) and finished with Hammerite.

Hi Jonathan,

Do you have the dimention of the post (lenght & diameter) by any chance ?

Also, while cleaning and paiting the post I assume you had the mast unstepped, but did you also put a temporary prop in place?

many thanks,
L

Hi Luca
I did mine in situ with the mast up so no need to prop.
I did this job on my M35 so the dimensions will be different.
Regards
Jonathan
